Abstract
Due to the increased usage of wireless networks, wireless sensor networks (WSN) and mobile communication in buildings over time and its effects on human health and data security, a cost-effective solution is required for electromagnetic shielding in buildings. A standard Frequency Selective Surface (FSS) consisting of wire-mesh sheet is demonstrated to provide electromagnetic shielding inside rooms. A model, based on transmission line theory, is presented to calculate the shielding effectiveness of the FSS sheets. The sheet is numerically simulated by a computational electromagnetic package as a unit cell with periodic boundary conditions in order to verify the analytical results. It is shown that the shielding effectiveness is decreased by increasing the operating frequency. The model results are compared with measurements. Good agreement between the analytical model and the measurement results is obtained. The structure can be widely used in electromagnetic sensitive areas such as hospitals and military sites due to its lower cost and light weight.
